What profession were you in before you started creating content, and when did you decide to take the plunge?
Before becoming a content creator, I was working at Google which is one of the best places to work so it was a difficult decision to quit my 9-5 job and do something unconventional but I think you have to risk it for the biscuit and I think that risk shaped my career and helped me discover my true passion which is content creation and here I am!
When you started content creation, did you ever think you’d grow so much?
So when I started content creation, I was pretty certain that it was going to become something big in the future because you know internet of course is our primary source of information and I did know that there was going to be a boom but little did I know that it is going to take off in such a big way, especially during Covid, I think those were the years that truly transformed a lot of content creator’s journeys especially the ones who started slightly earlier and have the first mover advantage so I definitely think that worked in my favour starting early and exploring content creation at a time where a lot of people did even think of it as a serious profession but it’s always about taking that plunge and believing in your passion and universe rewards you for it.
Any tips for budding creators? How is it different now than it was when you first started?
I think the biggest question that a lot of budding creators ask, established creators is “The market is so crowded should we even start?“ I think if everyone started feeling like the market is too crowded and they should start then there would be no new creators coming up in the scene, which is not the case because a lot of people do start and if you can talk about a topic in a way that you carve out your niche, you can have your voice and able to build following in a particular topic, I think there is no way that the internet is not going to reward you, I think people are looking at content creators as true spokespeople, who share their honest review, people believe in that way more then they used to before because what celebrities promote that might a little too far fetched but what content creators promote resonated with people way more so there is never been a better time to start.
How cluttered is your space and what do you do to stand out?
I think just like any other space, the lifestyle and fashion category is also very cluttered, there are a lot of people who are doing amazing stuff but what has helped me sustain myself and grow in this profession, in this particular niche is the fact that I am authentic to who I am as a person. I try to share an honest perspective of what I am wearing, where I am travelling, to what I am eating, taking people behind the scenes and not just giving them the rosy pictures. I think if you are authentic with your audience, it helps
Any crazy fan stories?
While I think every fan story is crazy because it’s crazy to think that people recognise you walking down the street, in the mall or anywhere you travel to I think for me the craziest story has to be when I was crossing a street in London on my birthday trip, last to last year, and a women who was not Indian, she stopped me in the middle of the street and took a picture of me because she was following my content and that for me was truly an example of how content creation has no borders and no boundaries.
Tell us about a brand you really enjoyed creating content for.
I think brands that let content creators be who they are and do not restrict them with too many briefs and brand mandates are the ones that I truly enjoy working with. One such brand is Crocs because I feel like they have always given me the creative liberty to express myself and to style crocs in my style and also present the video in a way that’s unique to my page and my style and that enables us to create something extraordinary for that brand and I feel Crocs has been one of those brands for me.
You can’t take long breaks from the internet, and no matter how you feel, you have to show up regularly. Do you sometimes feel under pressure to be consistent and post content regularly?
Well I think there is pressure to show up every day and even on days when you are not feeling good you have to put your game face on and pose in front of the camera or tell your audience about a particular product that you might not be feeling like taking about on that particular day but I feel like that’s the case with every profession right. In every profession and every industry, there are days when you will feel great and there will be low days but that does not stop you from doing what you have to do, I think there is a hustle culture but there is also a culture of understanding when you need to take breaks and I think striking a balance between the two is the sweet spot.
What was the defining moment for you?
I think the defining moment for me in content creation was w
hen I moved to Bombay right after my reality show, I had gained popularity and everybody expected me to be there because obviously if you are in the industry, Bombay is supposed to be the hub of entertainment but when I decided to move back to Delhi even though I was growing on social media and getting a lot of campaigns, people did raise a lot of eyebrows but I think that was a great moment for me because I was able to be myself around my friends and family and in my comfort zone and yet create a lot of value for my audience which did not change because of the city that I was resitting in, that gave me the wings to fly and shaped my career.
How is content creation different from other professions? What are the perks and challenges?
I think content creation is different from other professions because it truly depends on who you are as a person in other professions, you are sitting behind a laptop or a screen and you are typing out emails or making strategies for professionals, working for other brands. Here, we are all personal brands and that gives us both a blessing and bane because it gives us the freedom to express ourselves freely but it is also a bane because it puts a lot of pressure on ourselves as individuals to show up and be our best version but I think that pressure is what enables us to do our best every day.
Tell us about the ups and downs you’ve experienced before you got this far.
I think I had to go through a lot of failures before I discovered some things that I truly felt passionate about, I did a job that I quit, then I did a reality show and then I quit that industry as well completely. So, there were of course days when I was doubting myself, doubting the fact that I even wanted to do this but it is those moments and those mistakes that shape you as a person and give you the best learnings and those learnings are still with me and enable me to give my 100 per cent, no matter what kind of day it is even good bad or ugly.
Who are your favorite content creators and who do you wish to collaborate with?
One of my favourite content creators has to be Desi Perkins, she is a US-based beauty creator who started her sunglass brand and the way she showcases her work and balances her personal and professional life, gives a very wholesome perspective to each piece of her content which has something which is coming from her heart and also is a boss lady at the same time running great entrepreneurial venture that is extremely successful, I think just having a role model like that inspires me to also step into entrepreneurship
Which is your most viral reel ? How long did it take you to create it, and did you anticipate its success? Reel Link
I think one of my most viral reels was when I posted my house tour and when I posted about buying my l car, I think these were personal milestones which I had achieved because of my journey as a content creator so people were a little shocked to see that a content creator could also achieve all of these things just by doing this full time which people had not even considered a profession a few years ago and I think that shift in mindset made those reels interesting and people wanted to understand who she did it and considered this to be an inspiring journey and for me, that was the biggest reward that my successes were inspiring other people to do better and be the best version and themselves.
What’s next for you?
I have a lot of personal development to do, especially regarding my medical transition and other aspects of my life. I am excited to level up in my personal life and also be able to share that journey with my audience.
