Strict Laws in Katra Regarding Alcohol Consumption
Katra serves as the gateway to the sacred Vaishno Devi shrine, attracting millions of devotees each year. Given its religious significance, the town enforces a strict ban on the sale, possession, and consumption of alcohol. Any violation of this law is considered a serious offense, as it goes against the sentiments of devotees and the sanctity of the pilgrimage site.
Complaint Leads to Immediate Action
The controversy erupted when local authorities received a complaint on March 15 regarding a group allegedly consuming alcohol at a premises in Katra. Following the complaint, law enforcement officers swiftly responded, registering an FIR and detaining eight individuals involved in the act.
A police spokesperson emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Sensing the seriousness of the matter, instructions were issued by Senior Superintendent of Police, Reasi, Paramvir Singh, to nab the miscreants and set an example of zero tolerance towards any such act at a religious place, which can hurt public sentiments.”
Public Outrage and Legal Repercussions
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation from devotees and local residents, who see it as a direct violation of the town’s religious ethos. Social media platforms have been flooded with reactions, with many questioning how individuals could disregard the sacred norms of such a holy place.
Legal experts suggest that those found guilty of violating the prohibition laws in Katra could face strict penalties. As per existing regulations, any form of intoxication in the religious town can attract heavy fines or even imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offense.
