What profession were you in before you started creating content, and when did you decide to take the plunge?
I used to work as an analyst at KPMG and later at PwC. It was during COVID in 2021 that I started creating content in my free time. That same year, I got accepted into Columbia for an MBA, but I decided to take the plunge and become a full-time creator, so I dropped out.
When you started content creation, did you ever think you’d grow so much?
Not at all. Honestly, my first couple of videos were watched by my mother and her WhatsApp group. It was when I started putting out finance content in the form of skits that people fell in love with it—it was easy, relatable, and useful. Today, I’m the founder of 1% Club with a team of over 150 people, all because of those videos. Some days, even I’m amazed at how far I’ve come.
Any tips for budding creators? How is it different now than it was when you first started?
I think the most important part of being a creator is to keep experimenting. From when I started to now, there are a lot more creators, but if you look closely, it’s the ones who keep innovating who are the winners.
How cluttered is your space and what do you do to stand out?
When I started, nobody was making fun finance videos. But soon, people saw the appeal in this form of storytelling and information sharing, and many replicated the style. My aim is to keep creating content in new ways that help people get one step closer to financial freedom.
Any crazy fan stories?
I’m blessed to have fans who go above and beyond for me. My craziest fan stories usually happen during my workshops, when people from Tier 2 or remote cities travel two to three days by train just to attend my classes!
You can’t take long breaks from the internet, and no matter how you feel, you have to show up regularly. Do you sometimes feel under pressure to be consistent and post content regularly?
I’ve learned this the hard way—you need to plan and have a team you can trust. Initially, I found it really hard to strike a balance. But today, we’ve reached a point where there’s a bank of content for every occasion. It gives me the space to innovate and do more as a creator and entrepreneur.
What was the defining moment for you?
Opting out of getting my MBA degree abroad to start The 1% Club instead.
How is content creation different from other professions? What are the perks and challenges?
Content creation, especially as a finance content creator, is a double-edged sword. You’re either loved or criticized for your opinion—there’s never an in-between. I love it though. Being a creator helped me start The 1% Club and build a community of over 60,000 members.
